The Ramblings of an Avid Traveller

By

Character Building

I have always been very focused on my characters and their lives. It could be said that I put a too much thought into them, because I will sometimes plan out their past and future which can affect the story. Not many people will do this with their characters for that very reason, but I feel it gives me a better understanding of the people in my story.

There have been times when the futures I have planned out need to be changed for the sake of the story, so while I am reluctant to do so I will because sometimes that happens. It’s like in real life, you can have an idea of what you want to be or where you want to go when you’re older, but it will change sometimes.

Character profiles for me contain all sorts of weird and wonderful facts alongside the mainstream descriptions. For example, I know that one of my characters took singing lessons when she was six and decided that it was too boring, but now regrets this. These little facts don’t add anything to the story, but help me to understand the character I am either writing as or writing about.
