How to Holiday on a Tight Budget

1. Set the budget

Know how much money you have/will be able to set aside. This will help you to work out how much you’d like to spend on different aspects of the holiday.

2. Get free breakfast with the hotel booking.

If you have breakfast included in the price of your hotel reservation, you can fill up on that so in all likelihood you won’t need anything big for lunch, if at all. It also means that there is one meal a day that is already paid for.

3. Don’t eat out

It’s a holiday, so I understand if you’d rather not cook, but eating out/having a takeaway for every meal is going to add up. Try to find a supermarket nearby and pick up a meal deal or something from there; it will be a lot cheaper than a cafe or restaurant generally.

4. Self-catered accommodation

This is particularly useful if there is a supermarket nearby. With self-catered accommodation you don’t have to buy every meal out. The expense will, in all likelihood, be the same as at home (you can even make your own pack lunches). The downside though is that you will have to cook and clean while on holiday.

5. Free attractions/activities

Sightseeing and walks don’t cost anything, but a lot of tourist attractions have an entry fee so if you have a tight budget, it is advisable to look up some free activities that are on offer in the area.

6. Book in advance

As I mentioned above a lot of attractions aren’t free, but with a bit of forward planning they are cheaper. Most places now, offer a reduced price if you buy the tickets in advance online. While the reduction isn’t much, it is always good to save some money.

7. Be your own tour guide

You may not be well acquainted with the place, but if you sit down with a map and a list of things that you would like to see, you can guide yourself around the new location. I know that it won’t provide you with any local knowledge, but you get a free personalised tour (and a great story if you get lost).

8. Don’t go crazy

It’s not like when you’re a kid and your friend wouldn’t talk to you if you didn’t get them something. Your stories and happiness are enough; material items can get lost or damaged, but when travelling you are building memories that will last forever.

9. Find the best deal

It goes without saying; look around before you book anything to make sure that you get the best deal for the least money.

10. Don’t be fussy

Don’t have too high standards for where you’re staying and how you’re travelling. I’m not saying pick an awful hotel with sanitary issues, but your accommodation doesn’t have to be five star every time. Remember, it is unlikely that you will be spending much time in your room, you will want to be out exploring instead.
