Becky Falls is an absolutely stunning 50 acres on Dartmoor, with plenty of different activities, all included in the admission price.
It is the site of multiple waterfalls, but the most spectacular is the aptly named ‘Becky Falls Waterfall’ which is over 70ft high with boulders for the more adventurous explorers to climb up the side. This waterfall was created over 12,000 years ago! So, it has probably changed a fair bit and will continue to do so for years to come. When we visited the site, it was a drizzly day and had been raining for a while the previous day as well, but from what I have gathered this was probably one of the best times to go, because the waterfall was absolutely breath-taking with the water tumbling over the boulders. I can honestly say that so far this is one of the most beautiful locations that I have seen while exploring England.
If, unlike me, you aren’t an avid walker, there’s nothing to fear because there are three different trails varying in length and difficulty. The blue walk is the smallest and while it doesn’t include the 70ft waterfall, it does have a Children’s Nature Trail and involves the least difficult terrain, for those who struggle with their mobility. Grandad and Dad joined us on this part of the walk because they struggle to take the deep steps, then went to sit at the cafe while the rest of us continued. The red trail is the one that we continued on when we visited the site; it contains the aforementioned waterfall, where you have the opportunity to clamber over some large moss-covered boulders, which was really fun, just be careful not to slip! And, finally the purple trail, the longest trail, which is most likely to contain wildlife as it is less travelled than the others. If we had had more time, this would have been a route that we would likely have gone back and taken as well once we had eaten our lunch.
This place was positively magical, but even if you don’t believe me the Devon Pixies who inhabited the woods may have something to say about that. Visitors are encouraged to add a penny to the money tree so that these pesky pixies will bring them luck and not follow them home. My youngest sister was only about five or six at the time and positively adored seeing all of the little touches that had been added by the small creatures around the paths.
Any animal lovers amongst us will be completely at home in the animal section of Becky Falls. There is a petting area, for the typical rabbits, guinea pigs, etc., as well as the ‘Animal Discovery Zone’ where the invertebrates reside. Throughout the day, there are opportunities to interact with the animals, including feeding them, and to learn more facts about them.
Under current circumstances, Becky Falls is closed and hoping to reopen on the 4th July, but without Covid-19, the site is open every day excluding November, December and January. If you are an outdoorsy person, I would definitely recommend visiting this location of natural beauty.
