Top 5 Indoor Activities for Rainy Caravan Holidays

So, with the weather changing and given my experience with English holidays where it is likely to rain for at least one day of the break, I thought that I would list mine and my family’s five favourite activities for when it rains, and we are in the caravan. Four of them are left over from the days we’d spend under canvas so don’t involve electronics.

  1. Indoor Attractions: One of our favourite things to do in Devon when it rained, and we were camping was to visit the House of Marbles. If it looks like you might get rained out while camping or caravanning it pays to look at what activities or attractions are indoors, e.g., an onsite arcade or indoor swimming pool. It works well considering when the weather gets better you can do the outdoor attractions, but there is still time to see everything you want to.

2. Film Day: The brilliant thing about being on holiday is that if it is miserable out, you are able to just block out the day; there are no obligations like work or school. Now, when most people travel, they bring electronic devices with them and a great way to spend a lazy rainy day is pulling the blinds down and curling up under a blanket to watch a good film.

3. Read!: You can possibly guess how much time I spend with my nose in a book when we’re away. If not, I am an avid reader so give me a day where I have no other commitments and I would happily do nothing else. So, on many holiday days where the weather is dismal it is the perfect excuse to wrap up and read one of those books that sit on the to be read pile, while listening to the sound of rain hitting either the caravan and awning or tent.

4. Board Games: I don’t know what a priority is when your family pack for a holiday, but I can almost guarantee that one of the first things to be put in the caravan is the plethora of board games. Although, we can get a little competitive and loud, these games are great for nights in and rainy days when we don’t have any other plans.

5. Watersports: Now, I may sound crazy, but hear me out. If you’re already wet, it won’t make too much difference if you don a wetsuit and get in the water for a bit of fun. I know, it’s much more appealing as a way to cool off during a warm, sunny day, and I definitely wouldn’t advocate doing this in torrential rain or a storm (it largely depends on your ability and confidence in the water, it is important to make sure that it is still safe to enter the water), but if it’s just a bit of drizzle or the weather can’t make up its mind, I’d say go for it.

So, there are some ideas for those of you who are on holiday and the rain decides to pay a visit as well. Everyone has different things that they like to do when the weather changes their plans, but it is important to remember not to let it ruin the entire holiday.
