The Ramblings of an Avid Traveller

Key Factors in Selecting Your Travel Method

I’m not the best when it comes to travelling honestly, I get badly car sick and get a little nervous when taking off on a plane, but all is forgotten when I arrive. To me, the holiday outways the hassle of travelling there. Here are a few things we take into consideration when picking our method of transportation.

Is There An Alternative?

Living on an island the option for how to reach our destination can be largely out of our hands sometimes unless we want to spend the entire holiday travelling. So, before we even try to make another decision, we make sure that it isn’t a moot point. Taking into account whether it is feasible to travel by boat, Eurostar or plane is always our first step, as otherwise we will be wasting time and energy on a decision that we shouldn’t even be having to make.

Budget

As you have probably noticed, a lot of our holidays are done on a strict budget, so that we don’t get carried away and spend unrealistic amounts. It goes without saying that our choice of transport is influenced by this as well. When deciding between flying or taking the coach to Edinburgh, we took the cheaper option, so we had more money to spend while we were there (even if it meant I had to battle my travel sickness!)

Time Frame

Choosing the mode of transport also depends on how much time you have set aside for travelling. I know that a lot of people say the journey is just as important as the destination, but this instance I can firmly say that I will always choose the quickest route. When travelling you will always want to spend as much time in a location as possible, even going as far as choosing to arrive early and leave late so that you can make the most of your time there.

How Many of You are Going?

If a large group of you are travelling together it could potentially be rather expensive, especially if you were thinking of getting a taxi around your chosen location. If this is the case, it may be an idea to rent a vehicle like a minibus if you have a driver.

The amount of people going also influences how much luggage you will have, which will affect your transport choice. The more luggage you have can mean a higher charge for certain methods of travel, such as a plane, but it is still achievable if that is how you prefer to travel. So, it is something to weigh up against your options when considering how to travel to your location.

Your Accomodation

Sometimes the location of your accommodation can influence how you travel. The more isolated the location, the more likely you are to want your own transport. So, even if you don’t drive the whole way you will possibly want to invest in a rental car or something similar for the duration of your holiday.

Your Experiences

If you have travelled somewhere before by a certain method before this can influence your future decisions. Going back to our trip to Edinburgh, if we were to return to Scotland, we wouldn’t choose to travel by coach again, simply because we had such a bad experience with it last time. Nothing against coach travel but combining my travel sickness with Harry’s inability to rest while we were travelling in this way meant that it wasn’t an enjoyable method for us. On the other hand, we had such a great time on the Eurostar that we wouldn’t hesitate to use it again or recommend it to anyone who asks.

Conclusion

When picking your location, how you are going to travel there is something that will need to be taken into account. Sometimes there isn’t much of a decision to be made as it isn’t possible to choose a different method, but other times you need to think about all of the other contributing factors to come to a definite decision.

I too am often frazzled by the travel process (lots of people herded around, the crammed spaces, the unruly neighbours), but the destination is often worth it. Sadly now that seems to be put on hold for me, thanks to the pandemic. Anyway, thanks for this post!
