The Ramblings of an Avid Traveller

Fell Foot Park

Fell Foot Park is a beautiful location that I would have loved to spend more time at. As it was our holiday was pretty packed, so this was the beautiful backdrop for our water sports of Lake Windermere.

Water Sports at Lake Windermere

It makes sense for me to start this article talking about one of my favourite activities as well as our main reason for visiting Fell Foot Park.

This is a great place to enjoy some time on Lake Windermere whether you have your own equipment or have to rent equipment, which is what we did. There are so many different activities available such as Stand Up Paddleboarding, Kayaking, Canoeing, Swimming and using a Rowboat.

When you rent equipment at Fell Foot Park, it is generally from Stoked Watersports. This is who we rented our equipment from, with the cost including a locker and wetsuit hire which was really handy. You then get a safety talk with instructions if you have never done the activity before.

If you have your own equipment you are allowed to carry it down from the carpark and launch from the South side of the park. This is free of charge, which I think is great.

Facilities Available at Fell Foot Park

There are several facilities available when you visit this National Trust property. Firstly, there is a car park, so if you didn’t want to use public transport you have the option to bring your own car. It does cost to park there though if you aren’t a member (the fee can be paid by card if necessary) and when we were doing a couple of our activities the car park filled up with no spaces left, so if you are hoping to park there on a nice day I’d recommend getting there early.

There are also toilets and changing rooms at Fell Foot Park. The changing rooms do seem to be for those participating in the water sport activities and renting equipment, but they were really clean and had showers that were great after an hour or two on the lake. It is also in these changing rooms that you will find the lockers available when you rent equipment.

Finally, there is a lovely little café where you can buy food and drink. There is seating both indoor and outdoor, and should you choose to sit outside there are beautiful views across the lake.

Dogs at Fell Foot Park

Fell Foot allows dogs in all areas of the park, except the play area, some areas they have to be on a lead, but there are areas that the dogs are allowed to be off lead.

Dogs are even allowed in the lake off lead! Rosie would have absolutely loved this if we had taken her with us. Although you need to be observant and keep an eye out for poisonous algae that may be in Lake Windermere.

Other Activities at Fell Foot Park

  • Walking – There are several walks that you can take around the park. Two main ones that the National Trust recommend and offer maps for, with one being shorter but both sound gorgeous.
  • Parkruns – If you are a runner looking for a free activity around Lake Windermere then you’ll love the Saturday morning 5km parkrun.
  • Orienteering – You have the opportunity to download an app and explore Fell Foot Park by finding various checkpoints.
  • Yoga – I would have loved to try this out honestly had I known about it at the time. Can you imagine practicing Yin Yoga right next to Lake Windermere?

Conclusion

I really do love National Trust properties, and Fell Foot Park is no exception. I think if I were living around the area this would be one of my favourite spots. Fell Foot Park is definitely a location that I would recommend to everyone, regardless of whether you’re a solo traveller or part of a group as there is something that will appeal to you all.
