About Llechwedd Underground Golf

Llechwedd Underground Golf is one of several attractions hosted by Zip World. It is an 18-hole golf course across 4 floors, roughly 500ft underground. It is in fact the World’s first underground golf course and is only accessible via the steepest cable railway in Europe.

The Crazy Golf Theme

As you are probably aware, I have a weak spot for the history of a place. So, the fact that Zip World have managed to incorporate the slate mine’s history into their golf course was definitely a point in their favour.

Not only is the golf course built into a cavern from the mining days, accessible via a cable railway, it has a mining theme. Each hole is set around a different aspect of the old mines, using carts or fake dynamite for example.

The Slide

Another unique aspect of this underground golf course is the slide that you can use between holes 16 and 17. Both times that we’ve been I have used this slide, finding it great fun even as an adult.

Health and Safety

In case you missed me mentioning it, this is an UNDERGROUND golf course, so before you begin there are some rules and regulations that have to be followed.

Before entering the premised you (if you are over 18, a parent if not) have to sign a waiver just in case. You then receive a helmet that must be warn while underground and given a safety briefing.

It is also a good idea to remember that even if it’s a nice, warm day, you will want to dress warmly because it’s approximately 7°C down there.

Tickets

You will not be able to show up without booking, especially during busy periods (school holidays!). You are able to choose a timeslot, and should anything happen, preventing your slot from being available, you will be contacted to rearrange where possible.

Conclusion

I would really recommend this activity if you are in the vicinity. It is a truly unique experience that is a lot of fun for all ages. Even if like us you can get very competitive (it just contributes to the fun!).
