Experience the Bali Swing: A Must-Do in Ubud

The Bali Swing is one of the most iconic experiences in Ubud, and you’ve probably already seen it on Instagram or TikTok. These giant jungle swings send you soaring high above lush rice terraces and tropical forests, giving you that unforgettable, weightless feeling. After hearing countless recommendations, including from a friend who said it was a Bali must-do, we couldn’t resist trying the famous Bali Swing for ourselves.

What is the Bali Swing?

The Bali Swing is an attraction that allows you to swing out over a rice terrace and see it from a unique perspective.

We were surprised upon arrival when we discovered that the traditional/standard swing that is seen all over social media wasn’t the only option available. There were differently decorated beds, a birdcage, a hoop and more.

The history of the Bali Swing

It’s hard to imagine Bali without seeing multiple signs for the various swing locations. Yet before the original Bali Swing (located just outside Ubud) became viral this was exactly the case.

The first Bali Swing was recognised in 2017 and since then their demand and popularity has grown. There’s just something about that weightless sensation you get from swinging over beautiful scenery.

Our Bali Swing Experience

I will admit writing this that I can’t remember exactly which Bali Swing experience we visited, our guide had driven us there while telling us about the Luwak coffee, but I don’t remember ever asking for a name, not realising how many there were. I know it was close to the Om Ham Retreat & Resort, we also had the opportunity to try several teas and coffees before swinging out over the rice paddies, so it was likely the Aloha Ubud Swing in the Tegallalang area.

For us, this was an activity that hadn’t been on our original itinerary, but a friend of mine who had visited the area prior had recommended it and, given how much of a sucker I am for pretty scenery, it was a now brainer.

You will have the choice of a large number of swings at various heights, if you are visiting when it is busy the length of the queue may influence which option you decided to choose. We were really lucky there weren’t any other people there when we first arrived at the swings, so we had our pick of all of them, deciding to get pictures with the traditional swing, the bed for both of us and the flowery hoop. If you choose the traditional swing, you will be strapped in before being pushed out over the glorious views.

The safety

As previously mentioned, you are “strapped in” on the swing. What this means is that a band is wrapped around your waist and hooked on to the swing. There is also a rope behind your back that you are encouraged to lean on particularly when going out backwards.

This didn’t phase me much. Considering my apprehension when it comes to heights, both Harry and I had been expecting me to be really nervous, but I didn’t blink at the flimsy safety measures. Even with very little holding me in place I didn’t hesitate to swing out. Maybe it was due to the number of swings I’d been on as a child, maybe my sister has finally got me on enough high thrills activities that my fear is being worn away (Velocity zipwire was absolutely terrifying!). Whatever the reason, I didn’t question my safety until I was on the upward trajectory.

What to wear

Honestly, anything you feel comfortable in, preferably nothing that will fly off when soaring through the sky, like a hat or pair of sunglasses. I’d forgotten that my phone was in my pocket which could have ended really badly had my pockets not been just big enough for my phone to be wedged in under my hip bone.

If you’re as graceful as I am (read: not very), I’d advise wearing shorts. It’s rather nerve-wracking trying to settle on the swing looking over the precipice, and any thoughts of whether I was flashing the staff and those watching would have hindered my movements even further than they already were.

Renting a floaty dress

If you are looking to recreate the images seen on Instagram with the bright, colourful dresses floating behind you as you swing there is the option to rent a “dress” specifically for the photos.

If it’s anything like it was for us, as you approach the swings, nests, etc, you are offered the option of choosing a dress from their collection for a fee.

While it would have looked really pretty and possibly add to the experience, I decided not to borrow a dress. For one, it was our first day and we’d already spent a fair bit of money, but also, I felt that for me the feeling of flying over the scene was what was going to make this experience (I was correct).

Is the Bali Swing worth it?

Simply put, yes. If you are visiting Ubud, or Bali in general, and have some free time this is definitely something I’d recommend. The weightless feeling and unique views really add to the experience.

I wouldn’t recommend making this the whole reason for your trip or going just because you want to recreate the photos you have seen online though!

Conclusion

The Bali Swing truly lives up to the hype—it’s more than just an Instagram backdrop, it’s an exhilarating way to take in Ubud’s breathtaking landscapes. From soaring above lush rice terraces to capturing those once-in-a-lifetime photos, the experience was both thrilling and surprisingly peaceful.

What made it even more memorable for us was the friendly staff, who not only helped strap us in, but also acted as enthusiastic photographers, helping us get those perfect shots. While we hadn’t planned on visiting the Bali Swing initially, I’m so glad we took the recommendation.

If you’re planning a Bali itinerary, I’d say the Bali Swing is absolutely worth adding to your list. Go for the views, stay for the adrenaline rush, and leave with memories (and photos) you’ll treasure long after your trip.
